Woodward Governor Controls Retrofit – USNS Sisler, USA

Governor Controls Retrofit – USNS Sisler (T-AKR-311), Military Sealift Command.

In 2007, while contracted to Woodward Controls in the United States, I performed a critical governor controls retrofit onboard the USNS Sisler (T-AKR-311), a Military Sealift Command vessel. The project involved upgrading the CAT 3516 2MW Emergency Generator by removing the legacy CAT 3161 mechanical governor and installing a Woodward 2301A electronic speed governor within the control panel. A UG-A hydroelectric actuator was mounted on the engine to interface with the fuel rack, enabling precise speed regulation, improved diagnostics, and enhanced reliability for emergency power operations.

This retrofit was part of a broader initiative to modernize aging control systems across MSC vessels, ensuring compliance with evolving marine automation standards. The solution reflected Woodward’s commitment to delivering robust, class-approved control technologies for mission-critical platforms, with integration aligned to ABS, DNV, and Lloyd’s Register requirements.
